Definition of Branding and Control:
- Branding is the promotion of a particular product or company by advertising, the control comes into play by using certain strategies to gain attention or customers.
How Branding and Control relate to unrealistic expectations via social media:
- Often times brands use “social media influencers” to sell their products because many people follow them and they know if the famous person “uses it” then the audience (their followers) will want to use it as well. An example of this could be Blac Chyna who recently promoted her new skin whitening cream on her Instagram page. She now has control of the millennial that follow her, and chances are a big population of kids that follow her are also African American. Now all of her young followers who are the same race as her will think that since Blac Chyna isn't happy with her skin color, then I shouldn't be either. She has control of how these kids feel about themselves, but meanwhile she is making money from her new product.
- Another example of branding and control (brands paying famous people to advertise their product so that millennials will want it as well.) When all of Kim Kardashians followers see this post, they are going to want to buy the fit tea because she looks skinny in the photo, so the fit tea must be the answer. This relates back to unrealistic expectations via social media because she posted this to her Instagram, and looks very skinny (skinnier than most people) and now teens think that they need to look like that, and so they will buy the tea.
