Social media plays a tremendous role in most of societies lives for communication, and entertainment purposes. That is why around 70% of Americans and 2.6 people globally use social media.
- “Research studies conducted as far back as the 1980s and 1990s demonstrated that the decreasing weight of fashion models, actresses, and Miss America contestants between the 1950s and 1990s contributed to an increased discrepancy between the ideal female weight and the size and proportions of the average American woman at the time” (American addiction centers, 2017).
The definition of social media:
"Social media is understood as the different forms of online communication used by people to create networks, communities, and collectives to share ideas, information, messages, and other content such as videos. (History Cooperative, 2016)
- It is common to link the "start" of social media to the beginning of communicative technology which grew popular near the end of the 19th century. It wasn't until 1980-1990's that people had begun to have personal computers that would act as a platform to begin using social media.
- In 1997 the first social media site to ever be launched had been invented, called Six Degrees. This social media site allowed individuals to make a personal profile and add others to their network.
- More social media sites and apps came along like myspace in 2003 which was an extremely successful social media site until 2009 or LinkedIn which was founded in 2002. Once many more platforms were invented as technology improved, the less popular sites fell through the cracks while the more commonly used ones rose to the top.
