MEDIASPHERE: CONVERGENCE, IMAGE-FLOW, & TRANSMISSION

Media-sphere: Convergence, Image-flow, and Transmission Definition:
  • Media-sphere is the collective ecology of the worlds media including newspapers, journals, online post, advertising, blogs...etc. Convergence, image-flow, and transmission all refer to how everything bonds and merges together in social media. Convergence is a term that refers to the combination of media together into one point of access or one form. For example the telephone and the camera mixed together (smartphone) to create one form.
How this relates to media and expectations for teens?

  • With technology improving, there are many different apps and sources that teens can use to browse media. If we don't see something on Instagram, it will be on Facebook, or in the paper, or on youtube. This makes it extremely hard to avoid certain topics or images that may be harmful to our minds and can negatively influence expectations for ourselves.
  • In social media, there are many concepts that are squished together into one "app". For example, for many teens use social media as their main sources to “get news” from. Adolescents find out what’s going on in the world by looking at Snapchat news stories, most of what is posted up as news is actually not important or relevant. "Demi's sexiest photoshoot yet, or how to do your eyebrows like an Instagram model" are just a few example of what is considered news via these apps. This would be the convergence of news and social media apps.
  • Image flow & transmission refer to how the image comes off to the viewer and if it is "acceptable" or flows well. Is it a picture that is appealing? Will it get enough likes? Does the background match my outfit? These are questions teens often ask themselves before posting a picture, to ensure it will flow with societies expectations. Many want to be sure the image is put together and makes sense before they post, this refers to the flow of the image.
