IDEOLOGIES

Ideologies Definition:
  • The shared set of values and beliefs that exist within a given society. Ideology refers to the way that certain concepts and values are made to seem like natural everyday ways of life.

How Ideologies relate to unrealistic expectations for adolescence via social media:
  • Ideology is essentially the whole point of this topic, being that teens see something on the internet which is made to seem natural and normal for someone like them, then they have that expectation that what they saw online is normal and that they should be doing that too.
  • Ideologies can be shared from friends, famous "influencers", or anyone on social media that posts an expectation.
  • In our modern day society the ideology is that you should probably own a phone and some sort of social media so that people can identify you online and find more out about you. It is expected that you have a snapchat or Instagram or Facebook. But what represents you on social media is different than how you may be in real life. Everyone on social media wants to portray how happy we are and show only the best parts of our lives, but does not include any images of normal things that everyone has or goes through (acne, crying, downfalls in life) because we are pressured to portray a certain “us”.
Kids at younger ages than ever are being convinced that having a phone by their age is normal and expected.
