"UNANTICIPATED CONSEQUENCES"

Unanticipated consequence definition:

  • An unanticipated consequence is an outcome that are not ones foreseen or intended by purposeful action.
The Unanticipated Consequences of social media (negatively influencing adolescents):
  • Social media apps provide a platform in which teens rely on for entertainment and influence. Collecting likes and followers provide an immediate marker or achievement or popularity within a society or group. This creates pressure on teens to post pretty/attractive images of themselves so they can obtain validation of themselves from others.
  • The unanticipated consequences of these unrealistic expectations could include teens becoming anorexic or bulimic because they want to look like the thin edited models they see on their phones. Another consequence could include adolescence not being themselves because they are trying too hard to be just like someone else. One more unintended consequence could be that nobody really looks like themselves in images anymore because of editing apps. This can also apply to real life since getting lip injections is becoming popular and having big lips can make you "more attractive" to others. Nobody is unique, we start to lose our individuality.

  • Teens’ use of electronic devices including smartphones for at least five hours daily more than doubled, from 8 percent in 2009 to 19 percent in 2015. These teens were 70 percent more likely to have suicidal thoughts or actions than those who reported one hour of daily use.
